Built to withstand the toughest conditions: 4142 steel

The ultimate choice for high-stress applications: 4142 steel

After forging, the alloy may be slowly cooled or transferred to a furnace set at the end forging temperature. In effect, such a treatment would be a form of annealing treatment.

4142 Alloy Steel is a grade of steel that should be annealed to coarse pearlite to coarse spheroid structure for maximum machinability. Before air cooling, the steel should be austenitized at 1550oF, cooled to 1390oF at 25oF or 14oF per hour, or alternately cooled to 1250oF and held for 5 hours for an iso-anneal. Simultaneously, this can be normalized at 1600°F (870°C) and cooled by air.

Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, the steel will be austenitized at 1550 – 1600oF before being quenched in water or oil. The steel would be tempered at a heat level determined to provide the requisite mechanical qualities for the section size and complexity.
