“Centerless grinding accomplishes its tasks with the desired consistency but the process is done according to material shape and size to achieve that accurate precision in end operation.” Centerless grinding, commonly associated with “black magic”, is done through continuous material removal without the need to put a part or a workpiece on a fixture or place it on centers – that’s why it’s called “centerless”. Bars, axles, camshafts, etc. – all are inspired by centerless grinding. It grinds the surface of turned round bar of material. The grinding machine consists of three “cylinders” including the grinding wheel, the regulating wheel, and workpiece. The artistic turning of wheels grinds the part shape to its perfect roundness, straightness, and specified diameter tolerance. But unlike any other machining operations that require one, two or few cutting edges, grinding wheels used in this kind of operation use thousands of abrasive grains constantly reapplied in the operation. Types of Centerless Grinding Through-feed For round bars and parts, through-feed centerless grinding is used. Typically applicable in the process are long bars (e.g. six to twelve feet long and more). It feeds into the regulating wheel and the grinding wheel. It enters the other side and flies out of the opposite side. The bar is pulled by the regulating wheel past the grinding wheel. Through-feed does not require any separate feed mechanism but it can only be applied on parts that have simple cylindrical shape such as pistons, tubes, piston pins and bars. There is a workblade used in supporting the workpiece or the bar and holding it at the correct height just above the centerline of regulating and grinding wheels. This process is critical to the diameter tolerance and roundness of the bar. But the good thing is, both wheels held a consistent gap between them to control the bar’s shape. External feeding is not required in this process. In-feed For relatively complex shapes like cam shafts and gear shafts, in-feed centerless grinding is used. Workpiece is loaded into the regulating wheel and regulating wheel moved into place. Due to the complexity of part shapes, there is a need for the grinding wheel to grind them accurately, preventing it from being fed axially through the machine. Workpiece is held in a stationary position and the grinding wheel is being fed into the workpiece at specified depth and location. With three part positioning method, small diameters are even ground since they are entirely supported through their grind length. Smallest parts are ground extremely due to the kind of support it had. If you need these operations upon your application, Contact us or Get our Free Quote for more information!

Known as a highly versatile and great strength metal used in big industries and manufacturing, steel also has its interesting facts you never know existed. We have been using steel almost in all phases of our living – may it be in our appliances, transportation, manufacturing, production, infrastructure, and even in accessories. However, we must have overlooked how they are brought in the first place or their true purpose. To sum it all up here is quirky take on some of the interesting facts about steel! Stainless Steel Origin: An Accidental Discovery? An English metallurgist, Harry Brearley, was the first to invent rustless steel (stainless steel) literally for cannons, trying to find a way on how to prevent the cannon bores from erosion. Aside from carbon steel, he found out that chromium-contained steels were highly resistant to chemical attack and rusting. Excellent Mechanical Properties Steel is compact with the excellent elements on earth, granting it with exceptional mechanical properties. These properties make stainless steel highly resistible to rust, corrosion, wear, and oxidation. This is the reason why most of the manufacturers prefer stainless steel to be the material used in big industries like automotive, aerospace, and architecture. Self-repairing Metal One amazing thing about stainless steel that separates it from other forms of steels, is that it is a self-repairing metal. The metal itself produces a thin oxide film for coating itself from the unsightly blotches and rust, which is the way to prevent oxidation and corrosion. 100% Recyclable Steels are highly recyclable metals. Over a long period of time, steel won’t change it mechanical properties and won’t lose its strength so they can be recycled and reused again and again. To clean an aged steel bar prior to reuse, centerless grinding can be one of the best ways to restore its outer appearance and enhance surface finish! Expanding Elements Stainless steels are dominantly made of steel and iron which expand when heated. This is the reason behind why Eiffel Tower in Paris, France becomes six-inch taller during summer than in winter. Great Strength Steel is a metal with the best strength and it is roughly 1000 times stronger than iron in its pure form. Stainless Steel Soap? Studies have proved that steel can remove odor from the skin. This is the actual theory behind an old chef’s kitchen trick of rubbing hands on a steel surface like a knife or sink to remove the smelly garlic odor from the hands. Now, “stainless steel soap” said to be rampant in the market for that purpose. Steels have never failed to amaze us with its versatile features and characteristics. Though we may have seen them almost everywhere we turn, we may have also overlooked on how they are formed in the first place or the science behind it – which is why we enlisted all here together. The breakthrough in machining operations brought by steel bar straightening machines unfolds advantages and advances in the production of steel bars. The first thing that we all consider in machining a workpiece is to obtain the desired shape at the end in a short lead time, at high saving cost. But we all know that there are lot demands for low-cost precision from ranging manufacturing industries, that is why there comes a lot of emerging innovations in the metalworking industry to meet these needs. Steel bar straightening machines emerge in the metalworking to apply solutions to warped and distorted bar pieces caused by severe heat treating, welding as well as cooling. Below are few of the advantages straightening can bring to your bars: Gives accurate surface finish to a wide variety of workpieces Straightening is the easiest method among machining operations and delivers higher accuracy for a variety of workpieces. During the course of operation, there’s no need to worry about cracking in the workpiece because machines can maximize correction and won’t exceed this limit. Easy to handle with manual adjustment function Straightening machines have manual functions that you can adjust anytime to keep the machines stable. These machines have an automatic switch (automatic start button) that you can just operate to start completing a series of work while putting large control the labor used – for an improved efficiency. Durable Bar straightening can be applied after high-frequency quenching treatment which gives bars high hardness and wears resistance. Straightening wheels are ten times stronger than ordinary wheels which can handle severe operations. Straightening alloy wheels and cutters can be repeatedly used many times but still bring bars to enhanced hardness and longer life. Saves energy Straightening alloy wheels are used for a faster, easier operation. Since these machines can determine and correct surface errors, reinforced bar damages are small. Straightening machines are also notable for using low power. Gives desired shape Straightening can minimize distortion and warping caused by heat treated operations. It will just take few adjustments depending on the degree of bending steel to ensure the workpiece integrity. Steel bar straightening machines can determine the workpiece, seeing whether it can meet the requirement or give feedback to the operator. Straightening machines are compact in design, lightweight, and can be easily installed – and require less supervision in operation since they can determine the degree of the workpiece. They cut and straighten workpieces easily with low noise. These high performing machines can straighten and cut off bars automatically. Their high straightening speed gives way for cutting small errors and zero distortion. Those advantages mentioned above are concluded by statistics in the machining process. Operators mostly opt for bar straightening methods for a more convenient and safer production. We include bar straightening in our machining solutions. Grinding steel bars to get the closest tolerance, high precision, perfect surface finish while cutting away unwanted parts – all under one roof! Grinding is such a critical process which gives final judgment to the tolerance, straightness, and precision of a steel bar. This takes a thoroughly abrasive method of biting and cutting away unwanted bar parts from the material to improve the outer surface. A wide variety of steel parts from simple to complex may require grinding due to a lot of reasons: Accurate tolerance needed Precise straightness Smooth surface finish Abrasive material removal The grinding method had become popular and useful to most operators since it can bring all necessary work under one roof – in fast lead times. The fast material removal accomplishes high-precision work, bringing out the desired physical attributes of a steel bar. Grinding steel can be done in various ways, depending on the kind of workpiece requiring specific tolerance, cut, and diameter: Centerless Grinding This method is best fit to give precision and close tolerance to all machined materials. This is widely known abrasive grinding process that has been firstly considered in the machining industry. The centreless way can do a raft of machining processes in a single pass which includes polishing, boring, turning, and cleaning. Centerless grinding can be done in two different methods such as the: Thru-feed grinding The thru-feed grinding method is used to grind long, round bars. The workpiece (bar) is fed on the grinding machine and is pulled by the regulating wheel past the grinding wheel and then flies out on the opposite side. Typically used for long bars and tubes for automotive and engine applications. Infeed grinding The infeed grinding method is used for grinding steel materials with relatively complex shape and geometric figures. The workpiece is held stationary in the blade to allow abrasive cutting motion to get rid of excess parts. With the use of three-point positioning, the machine can grind even the smallest diameter. Best used for parts like camshafts and gear shafts. OD Grinding The Outside Diameter (OD) grinding is used to meet exact finish requirements and close tolerance in steel bars. It has four major divisions of techniques which differ depending on the way the workpiece is mounted in the feed direction. OD grinding is ideal for parts with either single or multiple diameters and even for external diameters with cuts or any feature which can cause disrupted cut. ID Grinding The Inside Diameter (ID) grinding method is used to grind several faces and bore in just a single operation. The operation used multifunctional cylindrical ID grinding machines to grind multiple faces and bores to get exact dimensions. This is highly applicable for materials like stainless steels, carbon steels, and aluminum to be used in industries like automotive, aerospace, chemical processing, and marine.
